Greensboro, NC, known as “Gate City” due to its role as a transportation hub for the state,
is considered an up-and-coming southern locale and is home to many successful businesses,
including these three hair salons. —Nicole Altavilla
Jade Aveda
Jade Aveda is an Aveda Lifestyle Salon that offers hair and
skincare services using Aveda products. Rhonda Pedersen, who
co-owns the salon with her husband, Mark, a master stylist,
believes that the salon’s affiliation with Aveda, as well as its
educated stylists, make Jade successful. “Our team is salaried,
which creates a wonderful environment and makes it possible
for us to offer great benefits and continuing education,” she says.
The 1,661-square-foot salon, which features an urban modern
decor with a soothing color palette of greens and blues and clean,
uncluttered lines, hosts various charitable events throughout the
year, including a Breast Cancer Awareness event and an Earth
Month cut-a-thon. Says Pedersen, “All of these are fun events
designed to create energy for the team and expose guests to new
products and services, as well as give back to our community.”

Chakras Salon Spa Laser
“At our salon, we foster a culture of innovation utilizing precision
techniques and custom color formulations to enhance our clients’
best features and individual style,” says Chakras owner Stasia
Iwanicki. “Our stylists are lifelong learners, network educators
and trendsetters who set the industry pace with progressive
designs.” Chakras opened in 1983 as Panache, but changed its
name when it moved to its current location in 2001. Attracting
a clientele who “seek classic, modern or edgy style that is
personalized for them,” the 2,700-square-foot salon boasts a
boutique-inspired design with warm sable browns, exposed brick
and natural lighting. “Our physical space reflects our respect
for ancient wisdom and modern technology—we describe it
as accessible luxury,” Iwanicki says. “In the salon we seek to
foster an environment where talented innovative artists can push
boundaries and be rewarded.”

Salon Bailey’s
Salon Bailey’s is housed in a building that was built in the late 1860s as a fireplace mantle
factory, but was gutted in 2003 due to a fire. A few years later, hairstylist John Bailey
decided to renovate the building and open a salon in the space. With more than 20 years
of experience in the salon business, including an apprenticeship at the Mark Garrison
Salon in New York City, Bailey wanted to “bring a little Madison Avenue to Elm Street in
Greensboro.” The 2,800-square-foot salon features a modern, industrial theme. In addition
to eight styling stations and a skincare room, the salon also includes a jewelry boutique.
Modern artwork that changes on a regular basis adorns the walls. The salon’s educated
stylists and top-notch hair and skin services attract a wide range of clients. Says Bailey,
“We have enjoyed creating an atmosphere where anyone looking to be pampered and
receive a great haircut, color or skincare service feels welcome.”
