Cielo Salon
In every small town across America, there’s at least one salon that raises the bar for
everyone else. Medford, OR, (population 77,240) has Cielo Salon.
BIG FISH, SMALL POND
Medford, OR, was named in 1883 by David Loring, a civil engineer and right-of-way agent for the Oregon and California Railroad, after his hometown of Medford, MA, and in recognition of its supposed position on the middle ford of Bear Creek. A replica of the Statue of Liberty, which is found in the city’s Hawthorne Park, isn’t the only thing that is representative of New York City. Residents can receive top-notch hair and skincare services at the big city-inspired Cielo Salon. “My mission was to bring to Medford a new level of service and a salon environment that did not exist in our area— something that individuals only experienced when they traveled to cities such as New York City, San Francisco or Miami,” says Cielo salon owner Christina Apodaca. Apodaca named the salon Cielo, which means heaven in Spanish, because she wanted it to reflect her Latina heritage and also describe what it should feel ike to be in the salon. “It was a perfect fit,” she says. The salon is located in the historic ACME Hardware building, which was built in 1947 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building creates an urban industrial ambience with 17-foot ceilings and a color palette
of soft earth tones like sand and brown accents. The main
floor of the 4,650-square-foot salon features nine styling stations,
an open color bar, a separate wash house with reclining seats, a
nail area and two private treatment rooms. Guapos, the salon’s
barbershop, is located on the second floor mezzanine and features
two warm cherry wood stations, black leather barber chairs, a
shampoo station, leather sofa and chairs, dark hardwood flooring
and vintage automobile artwork on the walls. Available to all
clients is Dulce, the salon’s bistro, which offers comfortable
seating and a menu of pastries, bagels, sandwiches, salads and
beverages from the area’s top restaurants and chefs.
Men and women of all ages are attracted to the salon
because of the educated stylists, high-quality services and its
charitable efforts. The salon hosts various events throughout
the year, including one that benefits at-risk children and
homeless teens in the community. Says Apodaca, “We
continue to raise the bar of expectation and performance
for client service, quality of salon services and community
involvement in our region.” ✂ —Nicole Altavilla
