The Commitments
Saying “I do” is undoubtedly one of the most important decisions brides-to-be will make on their big day, but choosing the right coif to accompany a wedding dress comes in a pretty close second. “Once upon a time, over-pinned and heavily sprayed updos were de rigueur on wedding day,” says Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty. “These days, less is more, and the betrothed are moving toward hairstyles that reflect who they are and how they feel most beautiful.” Doughty knows whereof she speaks—her latest collection stars chic looks that are designed to hold throughout he service and reception while still looking beautiful. “Easy to create, the designs deliver a hefty dose of romance,” she says. With wedding season just down the aisle, Aveda is doing its part to make brides-
to-be think green. The Blaine, MN-based company recently partnered with designer
Adele Wechsler on an eco-wedding event that focused on producing socially responsible
weddings (to see the beautiful looks Aveda created for Wechsler’s collection, visit
blog.americansalonmag.com). Naturally, beautiful bridal hair and makeup were a big
part of the day. Jennifer Covington, an Aveda Purefessional and stylist at the Scott J.
Salon in New York City, worked backstage to create natural, feminine looks shaped
into a half-updo and enhanced with matte texture and cascading curls to lend an air of
earthy elegance. “With the right products, these styles hold perfectly from ceremony to
celebration,” says Covington, who suggested using Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair
Spray to keep styles looking soft, natural and help them last through the day. Another
key trend at Wechsler’s show: beautiful bridal makeup that enhanced the bride’s own
beauty with colors that
occur naturally in the skin,
allowing the complexion
to glow. “Bridal makeup
shouldn’t have hard
lines,” explains Aveda
Makeup Global
Educator Janell Geason,
who defined eyes with
complementary tones,
created refined brows
and enhanced pouts with
a sheer shade of Aveda
Uruku Lip Pigment. “I
always advise makeup
artists and their bride-to-be
clients to steer clear of too
much or too trendy makeup
for their nuptials,” Geason
declares. “The goal is to look
naturally beautiful.”
